To The Highlands

When on holiday in Scotland my grandparents often stayed in the Gordon Arms Hotel in Tomintoul.

I visited the village a few years ago and the hotel was closed but there was talk of it re-opening. Does anyone know if it did?

These photos are from the early to mid-1960’s. The local Post Office and general stores was run by C.M.Ross & Sons.

Just outside the village my grandad spotted a lady cutting peat for her cottage fire.

Come back soon to see where Grandad went next Winking smile and, as always, your comments or stories are welcome.

A Bit Further Away

The two images this time were not taken by my grandad but by a friend of his while on a trip, I believe, to South Africa.
All of the images on this film were very over-exposed so I have tried to pull as much detail out of them as I could.

The colours don’t look too natural to me but, as I have never been to South Africa I wouldn’t really know.

Cambridge, I Think!

One of the problems that I have with my grandad’s slides is knowing where they were taken. In some cases he has written a location on the mount and in others he wrote index notes which were put in the original boxes. Unfortunately many of the notes have been lost or are not easily readable.

If you believe that the images are not where or what I have labelled them as, please, please, let me know.

Your comments are always welcome. Maybe you have visited  or live in these places, if you have a story to tell, please do.

OK, for the two images in this post I am reasonably sure that they are in Cambridge, am I right?

Cambridge

The Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge.  It was built in 1831 and is part of St John’s College. This image was taken in 1964 on Kodak Kodachrome.

This slide was also taken in 1964. Having searched the web I believe that this is St John’s College.

Your Turn, Grandad

I thought that I would start having a look at collection of slides mostly taken by my Grand-father.

These were usually taken while on holiday in Scotland, Wales, the Lake District and other parts of the UK.

The slides cover a period from around 1961 to 1972. Unfortunately they have suffered a bit from poor storage with the colours fading and in some case a mouldy growth. I have worked on them a certain amount but it would take many hours to fully restore them.

I’ll start off with a shot that obviously wasn’t taken by my grandad because it shows him standing in a friends garden. There is no date or notes on this one but I think that it would be from the mid-1960’s.

The second image is from Faversham in Kent where he lived. It was taken in 1972 and shows the number of cars parked in the road by commuters using the railway at the end of road. Nothing changes!

Back To Nature

No, not another set of nudes.

This time I have some wild flowers, a piece of woodland and fungi.

Can anyone identify these little flowers?

Fancy a walk in the woods?

Where Did That Year Go?

Well time has flown by and I still haven’t finished working on the glass negatives.

Here are three more from the collection.
